A Visit to New Castle, Delaware

20 September 2002

My husband and I spent a few hours in New Castle on 20 September 2002. I took some photographs and have included them below. Just click on the thumbnails to enlarge the photos.

David Finney Restaurant and Inn

The restaurant is located on Delaware St. and is supposedly haunted. We did not have anyone (or anything) join us for lunch.

Read House

It is located on The Strand and was built by George Read, Jr. whose father was one of the signers of the Declaration of Indepence. The house was completed in 1801.

Immanuel Episcopal Church

The Immanuel Protestant Episcopal Church was founded in 1689. The first church building was erected in 1703. The church is now known as Immanual Episcopal Church on the Green and is located on Harmony St.

Immanuel Churchyard

The cemetery wraps around the church and has a large number of tombstones. Look closely and you can see my husband Bruce in one of his rare appearances visiting a cemetery.

Another section of the cemetery.

This is a list of Revolutionary War Patriots buried in the cemetery. I wish I would have had time to locate and photograph all the tombstones. I now have a reason for a return visit.

Tombstone of George Read in Immanuel Churchyard

George Read was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Old Academy

It was built in 1798 and is located on The Green.

Old Library Museum

The old library is located on 3rd St. and was built in 1892.

New Castle United Methodist Church

The church is located on Delaware St.

Amstel House

This house is now a museum and the home of the New Castle Historical Society. I purchased the book New Castle On The Delaware there which covers the history of New Castle.

Court House

It is located on Delaware St. and is one of the oldest surviving courthouses in the United States. It also served as Delaware's first state capitol.

St. Peter Catholic Church

The church is located at 5th and Harmony Streets. It was established in the 1830's.

St. Peter Catholic Church Cemetery

This cemetery is located on the grounds of the above-mentioned church.
